I observed while hiring that the candidates commit the same mistake over and over while applying for a Digital Marketing job.
- They have not done enough research about the company
- They don’t have the right skill set
- They are not interested enough. I.e, they are looking for a job just for sake of doing a job.
According to me, there are tons of Digital Marketing opportunities in the market. The candidates have to be smart enough to grab the opportunities.
Next, let me tell you How to get a Digital Marketing job?
How to get a Digital Marketing job?
There are 4 basic things a candidate should do to get a Digital Marketing job.
- Basic Skill Set
- Reverse Engineer the skill set
- Quality over Quantity
1) Basic Skill Set
This thing is pretty much self-explanatory.
You must have the basic skill set for the job you are applying. For example: if you are applying for the job of an SEO analyst then you should have a basic idea of On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO.
2) Reverse Engineer The Skill Set
Look at the kind of skill sets the companies are asking for and look for the job description and also at the roles and responsibilities.
For Example: If the job portal says the company is looking for an SEO Analyst then you have to ask yourself the following questions.
- What does SEO really mean?
- Is it about Keyword Research?
- Is it about On-page optimization?
- Is it about Link Building?
Write these skills down and think how you are going to learn those skills. The best way to learn these skills is by reading, talking to people who know about SEO and you can also learn by watching YouTube videos.
Getting hands-on experience in these skills even if it means doing it for free. This tip will help you immensely in starting a career in Digital Marketing.
3) Quality Over Quantity
These are tons of Digital Marketing job opportunities but you don’t need all of them. You need to pinpoint on the companies you really want to work for.
So, apply for top 5 companies you want to work for instead of applying for 100 companies. They can be small and midsized businesses or they can be startups.
Research thoroughly about the company on the following prospects:
- How does their team look like?
- What sort of marketing activities they are doing across the board?
- Where they can improve themselves?
So, instead of spending 5 minutes on 100 companies, spend around 30 minutes to an hour quality time on each company that you want to apply for.
4) Pitch – Don’t Apply
Like we said in the 3rd point that pitch to the companies you really want to work for.
- Pitch to them in terms of why they should hire you.
- Pitch to them how you can grow their business.
- Directly pitch to the founders
Don’t pitch to the founders of MNC’s but you can pitch to the founders of SMB’s and Startups.
Create a thorough plan of 4 to 5 pages with images and bullet points on “Where they are lacking and Where are they doing great in terms of Marketing?” and “how you can improve their business and help them scale?”
Pro Interview Tip: When you are going through the interview process, have the attitude that “You want the job but you don’t need the job”. Showing desperation can make them undervalue your worth.
